People don't understand what SEO is and is not and what it can and cannot do. SEO alone will never get your site to number one on Google. People who say they will do this for you are liars, cheats, thieves and frauds.

SEO, simply put, is good practice and following web compliance guidelines. Knowing and using your keywords and keyphrases well. It's not marketing. That's another pillowcase full of spiders for you to chew over.

Good SEO plans should be simple and should be a case of getting your content and site to the best level of standards compliance as you can.

Following some simple guidelines, you can go some way to cleaning up your site and helping the search engines get what they need to list your site more effectively.

Here are a few tips to get you started cleaning up your SEO and compliance act:

  • Put keywords in the header
Simple HTML editing in the header to add keywords and a description. In CMS based sites, this can usually be achieved by editing your articles, items and global site configuration to achive this without going under the hood.
  • Learn proper text formatting
HTML to format your text. CSS to style it and keep them separate!
  • Put keywords in the header, no the other header
Use H tags in your articles properly by making sure that your article titles and content section headers are properly keyworded. Relevance is the name of the game here.
  • Include lots (but not too many) relevant links
Keep them relevant to your content, can't stress that enough!
  • Crucially: Stay away from black-hat operators
Pretty much anybody that says they can have you at the top, or #1 on Google. Lies. Deceit. Trickery. And they'll charge you a pretty penny for nothing. Sometimes one of these people finds a backdoor in Google. Trust me. It won't last long and will probably have your site black-listed by Google when they find out. And they will find out.
  • Keep your head in the right place
Some people get obsessed by creating content for Google. Google is not your customer. Create content relevant to your target market!
  • If Business is your deal
Create something people want. Simples. :)

Tell people. No, not via some dodgy spam email service. Tell. People. People you know. Friends. Relatives. Oh and make sure you're on Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, etc.
